4th Grade Phys Ed

This week, the 4th grade Phys Ed class started learning the names of the bones in the body.  For warm-ups, I divided the class into eight groups and assigned each group a color skeleton to build.  Each student then received a dice and rolled to determine which of the six exercise stations they went to in the gym.  After completing the exercise, they could then go to the "Bone Pile" in the center of the gym to take one bone of their color back to their team!  Working as quickly as they could, they continued the cycle of rolling the dice, performing the exercise and earning another bone for their team.  The first team to completely build their skeleton earned bragging rights for the day!

SUCCESS!!

After working in small groups to build their skeletons, I  handed out the big  bones to  the class to see if they could  work together  to build a skeleton.  Through collaboration and cooperation we all learned a little bit more about anatomy.

As we were wrapping up for the day,
I overheard one of the student's say, "Science and PE together - How Cool"!

The Cups Are Here!!

Project Fit America is a national agency that works with schools and educators to create new opportunities for kids to be active, fit, and healthy.   This organization has all kinds of curriculum materials and equipment packages developed to help keep kids moving in physical education.  We have recently received our set of 1000 cups to use in phys ed to "try out" this curriculum.  Below are several pictures of the 4th Grade participating in the Double Track, Cup Stack Race.
Students had to jog, skip, or walk  three laps in order to earn five cups for their team stack.

All cups earned through laps on the track or exercise breaks that happen every five minutes were taken back to the team in order see which team could build the biggest stack.

And the team with the most cups standing at the end of the class period was...

As you can see, we had a lot of cardiovascular activity, cooperation, and cup stacking fun with our new curriculum!

We're Off!

The school year has started and I am excited to see everyone so eager to get back to learning!  The new Phys Ed equipment is here and put away, the computer lab is buzzing with activity and fall sports are gearing up!  You may follow my lesson plans at Planbook.com and follow along with this blog to see "What's New in Mrs. Gurney's Room".

We are continuing to collect Box Tops and Land O'Lakes Milk Caps in order to meet our goal of $4,000 dollars to purchase a Rock Climbing Wall to be used by our students in Physical Education.  Please let you friends and family know to save these two things for our students.  I love that the students are earning a super piece of equipment from materials that we normally would just throw away!
