2014-15 Schleswig Tech Club

This year the Schleswig Tech Club has decided to focus on five different areas.  We meet every morning at 7:30 and the kids attend the topics that they are interested in.  Our schedule for this year is:
  • ·       Monday – Minecraft
  • ·       Tuesday – Robotics
  • ·       Wednesday – Memory Book
  • ·       Thursday – Multi- Media
  • ·       Friday – Film and Edit

Minecraft is a game based on exploration, gathering resources, and building using 3D blocks.  Students work together to survive and create in their virtual world.  Robotics is new to us, this year and the students have been busy designing and building robots using the Lego Mindstorm NXT kits and writing the programming for their robot to complete.  The Memory Book group is in charge of taking the pictures for and creating the annual Memory Book.  The Multi-Media group has been busy creating an advertising campaign for new type of tablet using both print and electronic media types and the Film and Edit group continues to film and edit concerts, programs, and ball games for the school YouTube channel.

We would like to continue our tradition on hosting a Community Education class this year.  If you have a topic that you would like to see covered, please let us know!

Schleswig Tech Club + HyperStream =AWESOME!!

This equation has been our motto this year in Tech Club.  Our Middle School Tech Club is still working on projects such as creating the Memory Book, film & editing, and community education, but…we have added the topics of robotics and multi-media for this year!  Our district was lucky enough to receive a STEM grant for this year to fund these new additions to our Tech Club programming.

Below is a little more information about HyperStream and some of the opportunities available to our students.  Please watch for more updates on the AWESOME things that are happening in Tech Club this year!

Developed by the Technology Association of Iowa and its Educational Foundation in 2008, we are pleased to announce the launch of the HyperStream Club at Schleswig School.  And it’s bringing real-world technology projects to your children.
HyperStream is also an approved STEM program by the Governor of Iowa’s STEM Advisory Council.
Technology is everywhere, and it’s changing the world!  HyperStream isn’t just about programming software or networking computers; it’s so much more. No matter what your children’s passions or skills are, technology is now involved in everything we do.  HyperStream will help prepare them for a great future!
HyperStream benefits for the students include:
·       gain real-world experience through hands-on tech projects, such as:
o   game design, LEGO robotics, multimedia, app development, and more
·     an opportunity to explore personal passions and interests, while exploring the world of technology
·       a fun, collaborative experience
·       learn from experienced professional technology mentors
·       competitions and field trips
·       gather insights for career direction

BACK TO SCHOOL WITH BOX TOPS!

We are once again collecting Box Tops at school.  We have collected enough Box Tops to add a ROCK CLIMBING WALL to the new gym!  Look for an announcement coming soon as to what we are saving for next!

The next mailing date for Box Tops is October 20th.  Please send your collection to school to be included in the fall count.  The spring mailing will be in February.

2014 PE Shoe Challenge

The 2014 PE Shoe Challenge!
The elementary Phys Ed classes are in a competition to see who can earn the most SMILEY FACES by Christmas break, with the winning class receiving an EXTRA PE time.  One of our goals in Phys Ed is for everyone to have fun and be safe, and we can’t do either if we are wearing sandals, boots or flip flops to class.

Every elementary student received a reminder note at the Back to School Bash to have at home to help them remember to wear appropriate and safe shoes on PE days.  Please help your child, and their class, to remember safe shoes!

We Did It!!

WE DID IT!!

We have finally collected enough Box Tops to pay for a Rock Climbing Wall!!  I was thinking, since the new gym addition won’t be done for a while,
LET’S KEEP COLLECTING and see what cool “extra’s” we can add to our wall.  We could add an additional two feet in height, add a magnetic finish, or even add rope swings or monkey bars to our rock wall.
We submitted $495.00 worth of Box Tops this spring which brings our total Box Tops earnings this school year to $1,124.00.

The next submission date will be in September, so please remind your friends and family to help us by saving Box Tops and by starting their on-line shopping at,

Hippity Hops!!

I’m sure you have heard….the Hippity Hops are out!

I hope you are hearing the same thing at home as I am here at school, “This was the best day ever!  Can we use the Hippity Hops every week in PE?”  We have two different size sets of Hippity Hops so all students in grades TK-5 will have the opportunity to get their bounce on this spring!

Pictured above is the TK class using the Hippity Hops in PE.   Besides being A LOT of fun, using the Hippity Hops gives us the opportunity to talk about our muscles and how working our muscles help to keep our bodies strong.  If you ask the TK, they will tell you that Hippity Hops use a lot of arm, leg, and tummy muscles.  Based on the number of smiles you can see in the pictures above, TK likes using their muscles!

8th Grade Technology

What does

and

and

have in common???

If you guessed….8th Grade Technology students creating a green screen music video to share on our Read Across America Day celebration on March 3rd, you are correct!
First the student’s in this class took on the challenge (with help from Mrs. Paulsen and Mrs. Rosener) to re-write the lyrics to the popular song, What Does The Fox Say, changing it to What Does The Fox in Socks Say?  After the new version was recorded the class then wrote the script for and filmed the music video.  By filming their video against the green screen, they are able to superimpose themselves into all types of backgrounds for their video.  The students’ are now in the final stages of editing their video so that it will be ready to share with the school on March 3rd.

When the project is completed, I will share the link on my blog for you to enjoy!

COLLABORATION

This month the 4th grade and 8th grade students worked collaboratively on an Explain Everything project on the iPads. The 4th grade experts taught the 8th grade about bones and joint angles and the 8th grade experts helped the 4th grade learn how to transfer data from different programs on the iPads to create a finished project.

Students worked together to take pictures of each other and then labeled on the pictures the different bones in the body and angels that our bodies can make.  One of the benefits of using the Explain Everything app is that we can record the student’s voices and handwriting on each picture and then combine all of the pictures into mini-movies.

The 8th grade technology is class is now in the process of taking each individual mini movie and combining it into one iMovie presentation and that will be shared with the 4th grade class.
Thanks 4th Grade for letting us show off our technology skills!!
